The Maine Legal Photographic Collection ("MLPC") was created to preserve and make available the photographic collection of the Nathan & Henry B. Cleaves
Law Library. The MLPC also seeks to collect and document, by photographic image, current and historical knowledge of the Maine legal profession and judicial system.
Currently the MLPC is composed of these individual collections: The Maine Judiciary -- single and group portraits; the William E. Morris, "Cumberland Bar Portrait Gallery", 1875; Members of the Maine bar -- individual portraits; Justice Sidney W. Wernick Collection; Practice of Law in Maine (offices and courtrooms); Social Scenes; and General Collection.
The MLPC acquires photographic images from within, or relating to, the practice of law in the State of Maine. Photographic images complying with these two criteria, of all media types are welcome for inclusion in the MLPC.
Our Preservation and Archive Project
Cleaves Law Library is currently preserving and archiving the 1200+ photographs in the MLPC. This involves housing the photographs in an acid free environment and assigning archival labels and numbers for retrieval by researchers. Our finding aid will be posted on www.cleaves.org when completed.
Our thanks go to Roger A. Putnam, Esq. who has provided the seed money to initiate this important preservation project
